I'm of the Barry Goldwater School on this question:
“Today’s so-called ‘conservatives’ don’t even know what the word means. They think I’ve turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That’s a decision that’s up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the Religious Right. It’s not a conservative issue at all.”
Let it be done in the private sector. Or at the State level. There is nothing in the Federal Constitution that gives the Feds any power over a woman's womb. I oppose vagina police.
And it goes against Jewish law where abortion is REQUIRED to protect the mental health of the pregnant. I can't find any socon who has figured out how to accommodate that.
Here is a good explanation of Jewish law with regards to abortion: http://www.aish.com/ci/sam/48954946.html
Basically if a fetus is threatening the life of the mother it is considered a "pursuer" such as an adult chasing you trying to kill you. Hence abortion is self-defense in that case. However, if its possible to save the life by just amputating a limb or otherwise "wounding" the fetus then abortion is forbidden.
I do agree with you though on federal law not having a constitutional say in abortion. I think it should be left up to the states.
